Carol Stanley was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in June of 2013 after a seemingly small bout with pneumonia. Due to her physical condition, she was told by doctors that she was not fit to undergo the standard care of a chemotherapy regimen and stem cell transplant. She was given a life expectancy between one week to one year.

The doctors at VCU Massey Cancer Center started Carol on a monthly regimen of the drug Vidazawhich was intended to keep the cancer from advancing. To date, Carol has completed more than eight months of treatment, has had multiple bone biopsies and battled several illnesses along the way, but Carol’s spirit remains strong, and her cancer is at bay.

“Team Carol’s Leukemia Crushers” was created by Carol’s son, Bryce Stanley, as a way to honor her strength and spirit, to give back to cancer research and to thank those who had helped throughout Carol’s treatment.  “It has been a long and bumpy road, lots of ups and downs and no one knows what the future holds,” says Bryce. “Each day has been a blessing and has truly put life in perspective for us all”.

The team originally started their fundraising endeavors with a t-shirt campaign for the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society “Light the Night” campaign. They joined the Massey Challenge in 2014 and raised more than $1,600!
